The Pleasure of Propagation: A Guide to Sowing Seeds, Pricking Out and Potting On Some gardeners find it helpful to make a drill or shallow trench in the compost with a pencil or bamboo cane for sowing small seeds. With large seeds, simply press them into the surface at the recommended spacing. Don't sow too thickly, as you'll struggle to prick out the seedlings later.
