One of Mexico's most well-known attractions is Chichen Itza, a colossal archaeological complex in the Yucatán Peninsula. The ancient Mayan city is famous for its imposing buildings, especially the pyramid of El Castillo, or the Temple of Kukulkan. The pyramid itself is a work of art in astronomical construction, set up to align with the sun during the equinoxes to produce the effect of a serpent descending its stairs. Chichen Itza was at one point a successful city and today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, drawing millions of people every year who visit to see its vibrant cultural heritage and breathtaking architecture.
