When I started to dip my toes into the US riding scene after a more than 15 year hiatus from the equestrian world, two things startled me:

1. How little education is given beyond the riding lessons.
2. How expensive riding is in the US.

Growing up as a traditional “barn rat” in Germany, I had the chance to do a lot of learning by doing. Here in the US, a lot of barns offer full service which allows kids and adult amateurs to fit the equestrian sports into their busy schedules. It super convenient and as a professional that often travels, I couldn’t do it without either. However, with that, a lot of opportunities for learning about the horses’ needs and for bonding with your equine partner are lost. Many of my friends who moved from taking lessons to leasing or owning a horse ownership felt under-prepared and not knowledgeable enough.
