Growth Factors in the Body Armor Industry:

  • Higher Military and Defense Spending

Increasing military budgets in several countries is one of the major factors behind the growth of the body armor market worldwide. Countries such as the United States, China, and India are continuously upgrading their armed forces and ensuring the safety of soldiers by investing in various equipment. The United States Department of Defense continues to buy advanced tactical vests and plate carriers valued at millions of dollars. NATO member countries in Europe are being urged to increase the preparedness of their militaries, including personal protective equipment for military personnel. Even with small countries in Southeast Asia and eastern Europe, increased military spending has become the norm. Not only are military forces buying military-grade gear, national police forces and various border security forces are buying up ever-more quantities of lighter, high-grade equipment. In addition, defense forces are focusing on personal protection and other modernization programs, particularly with regard to global conflicts and geopolitics.

  • More Threats to Law Enforcement

Body armor is now a requirement for police, SWAT, border patrol forces, and private security providers. Police are more likely to be shot while performing their duties due to urban crime, armed protests, organized smuggling, and terrorism directed against police officers. Many governments are now issuing ballistic vests, stab-resistant armor, and modular personal protection kits to police departments. For example, the UK Home Office set up a multi-million pound police safety fund to pay for new body armor for some police forces. In the United States, many state and city police agencies require that officers wear body armor on duty. Federal matching grants are available in the United States through the Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) program. Similar programs have been rolled out across Latin America and Africa, where public safety forces often face attacks by organized crime. This has sustained demand for large numbers of body armor sets, as law enforcement agencies remain reliant on officer protection.

  • Rising Demand from Civilians

Private civilian demand for body armor is also growing, particularly in the U.S. Private citizens, journalists, and security companies buy armor for themselves and their employees. The increased need for personal protection is attributed to rising political demonstrations, urban crime, and active shooter situations. Web retailers such as Safe Life Defense and Bulletproof Zone reported an increase to sales of civilian body armor. These included light weight concealed armor vests or bulletproof backpacks. Various non-military customers include teachers, ride-share drivers, and journalists in combat zones. Other countries are also loosening such restrictions, offering certified armor for civilians, possibly due to an increase in crime or concerns for personal security in some countries where a higher risk factor exists due to the profession or area in which the person lives. The move towards civilian use has, in effect, created new customers and new markets for manufacturers to supply with purpose-built products.

Key Trends in the Body Armor Market:

  • Focus on Lightweight and Comfortable Armor

Lightweight ergonomic body armor gives enough protection. It is the most important trend in the body armor market. It replaces the historically heavy cumbersome body armor. That older armor only suited high-risk missions in hostile environments. Modern manufacturers are constructing vests of high-strength, light materials such as UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) or aramid fibers which both have protective properties against bullets and shrapnel and are lightweight. Point Blank Enterprises pioneered the lightweight tactical armor systems to provide long-wearing comfort without fatigue. Safariland's armor kits are even becoming more modular, with options to provide more or less coverage of the body parts the armor protects, due to demands from soldiers, police officers and even EMTs. To ease adoption and user experience, systems are being developed or improved with a focus on user comfort, function, and mobility, in particular when used in urban combat or patrol situations.

  • Use of Smart and Connected Armor

Smart body armor utilizes technology to dynamically alter its functionality. Other applications of smart technology include the integration of sensors to monitor vitals as well as the impact of force and location and to communicate this information back to a command center. Soldier situational awareness systems could also be integrated with the armor. Companies like Australian XTEK and BAE Systems are developing soldier wearable armor systems that can relay information, such as injury or location, when the wearer is incapacitated. Smart vests, worn by police officers, monitor body temperature to detect when heat stress occurs and warn the officer to limit the duration of heat exposure, preventing injury during long work shifts. Prototype vests change shape or stiffness depending on threat levels. Improved mission command, faster emergency action, and analysis have led to increasing interest in connected body armor as military and police forces apply digital technologies to operations.

  • Rise in Custom-Fit and Gender-Specific Gear

The most major driver of the industry is the need to manufacture body armor for more body types, especially those of women. Body armor size charts were historically based on the average male body. Some women officers and soldiers complained that body armor designed for men did not fit, felt bad, and gave less protection. Leading manufacturers including Armor Express and Blauer began to design body armor for women with curved plates, adjustable straps, and tailored panels to fit their shape. The gear is now fielded by US and Canadian departments, where tests revealed increased mobility and coverage. 3D scanning technologies and digital tailoring advanced recently and allowed people to customize protective clothing. This is improving both safety outcomes and morale, for now all personnel can comfortably and effectively wear armor regardless of gender or body shape or size.
