Telehealth Physical Therapy 101: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Okay, let's be honest for a minute: the thought of undergoing physical therapy via a screen seems strange, doesn't it?  How can someone assist you with your back pain when they're not even in the same room?

That was also the first thing that sprang to mind.  But then I gave it a go, and wow.  A game changer.

Let's speak about it without using any fancy words or medical jargon.  Let's speak honestly about what telehealth physical therapy is, how it works, and why it could be the greatest thing you've never tried.

What is telehealth physical therapy, anyway?

You don't have to go to a clinic; instead, you may talk to a professional physical therapist over a video conference, like FaceTime.  They monitor how you walk, teach you exercises, help you adjust your form, and even check over your home or work area to make sure it's not secretly making your pain worse (I'm looking at you, kitchen chair "office").

You receive the same level of knowledge as you would in person, but you don't have to drive, stand in line, or feel embarrassed when you remember you forgot your shoes.

You can do it in your living room.  Or your garage.  Or, like me, that strange part of your home that you now label "the wellness zone."

 "But does it really work?"

That's a very valid question.  Especially if you're thinking about getting therapy for back pain, which, let's be honest, is why half of us even require PT in the first place.

The fact is that technology and sophisticated tools don't treat most back discomfort.  It's about becoming better at moving.  Sitting in a wiser way.  Strengthening the proper muscles so your spine doesn't have to perform all the hard work (in a literal sense).

That's where telehealth really shines.  Your therapist can see how you sit at your computer, how you pick up your child, and how you stand when you wash your teeth. They can see all the tiny things you do in real life, not a sterile clinic.

They'll see things you don't even know you're doing wrong.  Like the little turn you make as you grab for the remote.  That one, yes.

 Why People Are Loving It

Hey, conventional PT is great.  But let's be honest: it can be a logistical headache.

You have to take time off work, go across town, find a place to park, and hope that you don't get stuck in traffic because the person in front of you hit every red light.  You are more stressed when you get there than when you began.

Telehealth physical therapy changes that.  You merely open your laptop, join the session, and you're good to go.

Some more benefits that individuals swear by include

No time spent traveling.  You save a lot of time every week.

Comfort.  If you like, you may do your workouts in your jammies.  No judgment.

Being able to change.  You can fit a session in between meetings or even during your lunch break.

Customization.  Your therapist can observe where you really are, like your chair, sofa, and stairs, and make workouts that fit that.

It's like having a coach who comes to you, in person.

What You Need and What to Expect

You don't have to purchase a lot of fancy things.  Promise.

 This is the list:

A phone, tablet, or computer that has a camera.

A calm place with enough room to roam about a little.

Your therapist has to be able to see you, so some good lighting is important.

They'll tell you what you need, like a yoga mat, towel, or resistance band.

Your first session will probably feel like a combination of talking and taking a test.  They'll want to know where it hurts, how it began, and what makes it worse.  They'll next ask you to perform a few activities, like touch your toes, twist, or squat, to check how your body is processing it.

It's not a test of your fitness, so don't worry.  It feels more like being a detective.

After that, they'll show you how to do certain exercises, watch your form, and make changes as needed.  It's aid with your hands, but not with your hands.

 Who Should Use It

If you've recently had significant surgery or a serious injury, you may still need to see a therapist in person, at least at first.  Telehealth works well for things like

back pain treatment, stiff necks, bad posture, or small sprains.

 It's perfect for folks who:

I work from home and sit for too long (guilty).

You travel a lot and can't make it to in-person sessions.

You have trouble moving around or live distant from a clinic.

They just want to do things when they want to.

It's all about making things easier without skimping on attention.

The Best Thing?  The connection is still there.

I have to confess that I was doubtful.  I expected virtual PT would seem... distant.  But to be honest?  No, it doesn't.

You're still in front of each other.  You still talk, joke, and maybe even moan when an activity hurts more than you thought it would.  They constantly pretend like they don't like it, but come on, they do.

You make a true connection with someone that keeps you responsible, inspired, and moving ahead.

Even via a screen, it's surprisingly intimate.

Should You Give It a Go?

If you've been putting off physical therapy because you're too busy or your back pain simply seems like "something you'll deal with later," it may be time to try telehealth.

You don't have anything to lose.  What if things go wrong?  You learn some new stretches and laugh with someone who understands what you're going through for 30 minutes.  Best case?  You move better, suffer less, and finally get rid of that dull, nagging pain that has been holding you back.

So go ahead.  Put down a mat, get your laptop, and start small.  Your body will be grateful for it, and possibly sooner than you think.
