How to Get BIS Certification

Begin by determining which BIS scheme applies to your product. In India, products are certified either under the ISI Certification Scheme, which involves licensing, factory surveillance, and use of the ISI mark, or under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), mainly for electronics and IT products. Once the correct scheme is identified, select the applicable Indian Standard (IS) and carefully study its scope. The scope clearly specifies testing requirements, labeling norms, and any exclusions that may apply.

Next, create a structured compliance plan. Identify all product models and variants, map the relevant clauses of the standard to each product, and gather the required technical and regulatory documents. These typically include product drawings and specifications, a list of critical components, safety declarations, and evidence of a quality management system (QMS). Proper preparation at this stage helps avoid delays later.

Product testing must be carried out at a BIS-recognized laboratory with experience in your product category. Finalize sample quantities, testing timelines, and report formats in advance. While laboratory testing is in progress, prepare your application dossier, which includes business registration documents, brand authorization (where applicable), labeling or marking artwork referencing the relevant IS standard, and—if you are a foreign manufacturer—the nomination of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).

Under the CRS route, once testing is successfully completed, you submit the test reports and documents through the BIS online portal, pay the prescribed fees, and receive a Registration Number (R-number) upon approval. For products covered under the ISI Scheme, BIS conducts a factory inspection to verify production controls, in-house testing facilities, and marking procedures, followed by ongoing surveillance after the license is granted.

After approval, strict compliance must be maintained. Use BIS marks exactly as prescribed, follow packaging and labeling rules, keep production and test records, and promptly report any changes in design, components, firmware, or suppliers. Establish a renewal schedule and a clear process for adding new variants to ensure continuous compliance.
